We’ve all heard it before. Maybe you’ve even said it yourself: “I want to grow this organically.”

On the surface, it sounds great—who wouldn’t want their business to grow naturally, without forcing it?

But there’s a common misconception baked into the idea of “organic growth.”

What many people actually mean when they say they want to grow organically is that they don’t want to do any proactive planning or hard work. They just want to see what happens, without any focused effort in a particular direction. The reality is, however, that even organic growth requires structure, intention, and a framework.

Think about nature for a moment. Sure, a tree grows “organically,” but it does so based on a blueprint written into its DNA. There’s a formula there—an order and a structure that guide its growth. Sunlight, water, and nutrients contribute to its development, but it’s not just randomly happening

There’s a code within it that determines how it grows and what it becomes.

So, if even the most organic things in nature rely on structure to thrive, why would we think a business could grow without any kind of formula or framework? Let’s dig deeper into why this “organic growth myth” can hold you back and what you can do instead to make meaningful progress.

The Fallacy of “Let’s Just See What Happens”

Imagine if a farmer approached their crops this way. Instead of planting seeds in an orderly row, giving them water, and keeping the soil healthy, they just threw seeds into the wind and hoped for the best. They’d end up with a few random sprouts—if they’re lucky.

Just like nature, a business needs a framework—a set of conditions that guide its growth. This doesn’t mean forcing growth unnaturally; it means creating an environment where growth can happen intentionally.

Organic Doesn’t Mean Unplanned

Just like nature, your business needs some kind of DNA—a formula that determines how you approach marketing, customer service, product development, and everything else.

This doesn’t mean you need a rigid plan that can’t adapt, but you do need a framework that provides direction and consistency.

In other words, you need to plant your seeds in the right soil, water them regularly, and prune as needed. You need to have a structure in place for growth to occur. And by the way, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to throw money at each of these things, but it does mean you need to put intention behind each part of your business.

Building Your Growth Framework

If you’re still thinking, “But I really want to grow organically!” then let’s talk about what that really means. It doesn’t mean doing nothing and hoping for the best. It means putting the right elements in place to allow growth to happen naturally over time.

Here’s how to approach it:

  1. Define Your Growth Blueprint

Just like DNA determines how an organism develops, you need a clear blueprint for your business. What are your growth goals? What metrics will you use to measure progress? What strategies will you consistently implement? Define these elements so you can build an environment where growth is inevitable.

  1. Create the Conditions for Success

For organic growth to happen, you still need to set the right conditions. That means having the right resources, the right people, and the right practices in place. Your business won’t grow just because you want it to—it will grow when you create the right environment for it.

  1. Be Intentional with Your Efforts

There’s nothing passive about organic growth. Think about a gardener who tends to their plants daily, pruning, watering, and making sure each one gets what it needs to thrive. That’s what it means to grow “organically”—constant, intentional care and adjustments. Your business requires the same ongoing effort.

  1. Embrace Adaptability Within Structure

Organic doesn’t mean rigid, and having a framework doesn’t mean you can’t adapt. Your structure should be flexible enough to allow for growth in unexpected areas, while still providing a clear path forward. If you find a better way to do something, integrate it into your blueprint.

Why the Organic Growth Myth Can Hold You Back

The real danger in believing the “organic growth myth” is that it encourages a hands-off approach.

It’s an excuse to not commit to a strategy, to avoid taking decisive actions, or to resist planning for the future. But if you’re not proactive about growth, you may find yourself wondering why nothing is changing, or why growth seems so slow and unpredictable.

True “organic” growth is rooted in structure. It doesn’t mean you aren’t adaptable; it means you have a formula guiding your path, and you tweak it as you go.

So, if you’re aiming to grow organically, start by building your structure. Define your growth blueprint, set the conditions for success, and take consistent, intentional actions. When you do that, you’ll see growth that’s not just “natural,” but meaningful and sustainable.
